Social Enterprise Project
Funded by:  Ontario Trillium Foundation
December 2007 – June 2009

In December 2007, Laubach Literacy Ontario (LLO) received approval from the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) for an 18-month project to assist six LLO sites to launch “Social Enterprises”.

Pilot sites that were involved with the Social Enterprise Project include LLO and five of its member agencies:
  • Midland Area Reading Council,
  • Barrie Literacy Council,
  • North Bay Literacy Council,
  • Literacy Alliance of West Nipissing (LAWN) Adult Learning Centre
  • Literacy Group of Waterloo Region-Kitchener.
The primary project goal was that, once operational, the social enterprises at the six pilot sites could generate revenues by offering a variety of programs, services or products.  Some examples of “Social Enterprise” projects are adult upgrading, teaching computer skills, developing food service ventures like small cafés or bakeries, or operating storefronts, such as gifts, used clothing or furniture stores.

The following documents listed under downloads available are great resources for non-profits interested in pursuing a social enterprise.
