Program Description

Literacy, numeracy and essential skills services that help individuals achieve goals related to further education and training, employment or increased independence * support in clarifying upgrading goals and developing a training plan to achieve them

Also academic upgrading that helps individuals develop the necessary skills for entry into post-secondary education, apprenticeship training or employment

Native Learning Centre - This program invites all adults to join in sessions and to participate in the Native traditional learning session. Areas of skill development include reading, writing, basic math and life skills, traditional teachings, seminars, Native language classes and Elders program. Focus is upon programs and methods that maintain Native traditions and culture. Strengthening Hamilton Aboriginal Education (SHAE) - The Hamilton Wentworth District School Board has partnered with the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre to create an alternative education for Aboriginal students wishing to continue their educational career but not currently attending a secondary school in Hamilton. The Alternative Education Program at the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre features:
  • A drop-in, self-paced, structure
  • Credit attainment by completing Independent Learning Centre and locally developed courses
  • Small group and individual instruction and support
  • Mandatory 18 hours a week attendance
  • A culturally appropriate learning environment
